Getting to Know You

What are your expectations for this class and for yourself in this class? What do you think of when you hear the word movie? What is your favorite movie? Why?

    Film

My expectations for this class are to further develop my understanding of film and apply it to making them as well. I mainly want to advance what I already know and to fully understand how complicated film truly is. By the end of this course, I would like to have the ability to transform creative ideas into films and to breakdown every film I watch and analyze it thoroughly in order to fully absorb what the film is presenting. When I hear the word movie, I assume it is a motion picture story where there is plot, story, characters, etc. I like to think it’ll be enjoyable and that watching it will drive my interest more. My favorite film would most likely be Suspiria. I fell in love with every part of this movie, between the lighting, soundtrack, atmosphere, pretty much everything. It is also a horror movie which happens to be my favorite. Some close seconds are Kill Bill, 28 Days Later, Stalker and The Deer Hunter.

  2. My expectation for this class is to get better at actively viewing movies as an art form and to better understand how movies use different techniques to create meaning. Personally, I would like to learn more about the language of cinema, how to actively recognize when it’s being used, and the potential meanings and themes being conveyed. Furthermore, I am also interested in learning about the process of making movies and the different tasks and skills one must acquire to create a meaningful film.
When I hear the word movie, I first think of a source of entertainment, but more recently I have began to view them as more of an art form used to tell a story, or an abstract presentation of an idea or theme.
My favorite movie might be Big Fish although some other favorites are One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and Princess Mononoke. I like Big Fish because it’s a web of interconnected stories presented in a vivid and appealing way that influences the viewer’s emotions and conveys the underlying theme of seizing the opportunities that life gives you, and to cherish the special people and moments in your life. I especially like the imagery throughout the whole movie, and specifically the daffodil meadow scene.

  3. My expectations for this class are to be able to explore my love of watching movies and creating short films. By the end of the course, I hope to have found the tools I need to find the hidden meaning behind most movies and to have found where I fit into the movie-making industry (be it directing, script-writing, or editing), as it is something I am thinking of pursuing. Additionally, I hope to use the skills I learn about from other filmmakers and apply them to a movie of my own that has significance and leaves some sort of lasting impression on my audience.
When I hear the word “movie” I think of a motion-picture and the worlds of Hollywood and other global cinema. Generally, I think of something that you go to watch in a theater with a barrel of popcorn, and only occasionally remember for a long time. To me, it is the most effective artform for getting an idea across; tangible or not.
When asked my favorite movie, the first one that comes to mind would have to be Pride and Prejudice (2005), simply because of the soundtrack and how it works so seamlessly with the movie (and how the songs have become some of my favorites). Some of my other favorites would have to be the original Star Wars trilogy, Jaws (1975), Paterson (2016), Call Me by Your Name (2017), The Birds (1963), Dunkirk (2017), Nightmare Before Christmas (1993), and a few more that I’m definitely forgetting.

  4. have various expectations for this class some of them not specific to film. The first reason is that I would like to improve my writing and I saw this class as an ideal opportunity to achieve this due to the high volume of creative and analytical writing I am going to do .To be more clear I’m not taking this class as an obligatory contribution to my writing skills I’m approaching writing from a place of interest in film. The second reason which I hope is self evident is that I love movies , I consider film just as valid as music or literature as an art form . Not only this but film is distinguished by its practical relevance to the modern world , it’s a far more digestible art form for the general public and It is consumed on a much larger scale.A reason of less personal relevance for taking this class is that I would like to collaborate with my sister as we have a level of communication that’s not possible in general group work . It seemed to be only an inevitability we that we would work together so it is an expectation that we produce something better than what each of us could’ve achieve on our own.The final expectation I’ll discuss regarding this class is that I’m expecting to enjoy production far more than analyzation not because I dislike analyzation but because I’m very excited to learn how to produce movies.
What I think of when I hear the word movies are the live action motion pictures that I lve grown up with and thus taken for granted. For this reason it’s uncomfortable for me to think of all the technical layers of a live action production.
My favorite movie of all time is Cleopatra(1963)
Which isn’t generally recognized as worth of merit which I will admit it has a tendency for tasteless dramatism. My affinity for this movie is partly attributed to my affinity for the lead actress Elizabeth Taylor but that isn’t enough to appreciate a 4 hour movie .I enjoy the historical setting which compels realism and gives structure to the cleverness which characterized the narrative.

  5. My expectations for this course consist of being able to learn how to properly study films and other works of cinema. As of now, film is one of my main interests but i'd like to explore the concepts of it in more depth. When I hear the word "movie", the first thing that comes to my mind is a story being told through a visual medium with inner messages that can be deciphered if studied properly. I enjoy a variety of movies, but some of my favorites are under Studio Ghibli, such as Spirited Away. Miyasaki's movies invoke a sense of wonder and joy in me no matter how many times I re-watch them. Perhaps its the worldbuilding, or the art style, but altogether it creates a wonderful product. My second favorite movie is Train To Busan, its a Korean movie with one of my favorite actors; Gong Yoo. The movie itself is extremely violent but I appreciate how it took certain leaps that typical Hollywood dystopian movies would not take.
